Going into the draft, the Rams needed major help at both corner and safety. The Rams tagged Trumaine Johnson and signed Kayvon Webster but they still lacked any type of depth. The team found a way to fix that by signing former Buffalo Bill and USC Trojan Nickell Robey-Coleman.
Coleman is entering his fifth season in the league and compared to the rest of corners on the roster he brings a lot of experience to the table. Coleman has never missed a game and while he’s only started fifteen total games, he was able to pile up 133 tackles and three interceptions, one of which came last year against the Rams.
The Coleman signing marks the second former Bill and Trojan the Rams have come away with in free agency after signing wide receiver Robert Woods earlier in free agency.
Now that the Rams have another veteran piece in their secondary they at least have a less to worry about heading into the draft. They could still use one of the blue chip corners in the draft but they need a safety more.
Coleman at least lets them kick the can on their corner issues another year and allow them to find a replacement for T.J. MacDonald who departed to the Miami Dolphins. He is also valuable as a slot corner back and makes it so the Rams don’t have to lean to much on their younger talent. If he works out he may even replace Trumaine Johnson should the Rams decide to not bring him back next year.
The Coleman signing now makes it clear that unless some defensive talent falls to the Rams at 37th overall they will definitely use this pick to land Jared Goff another weapon because now they can at least say they addressed the corner back position for the time being. That doesn’t mean they won’t go after one in rounds three or four but this all but seals that they’re taking a receiver in round two.
