Martellus Bennett Could Be LA Rams Skill Player Alternative

As the deadlines for NFL teams to use their franchise tags and free agency approach, plenty of top-notch skill-position players could be available to the offensively challenged Los Angeles Rams.

The problem with signing an Alshon Jeffery, a DeSean Jackson or even a Jamaal Charles is that they likely would cost the Rams a pretty penny. With all the holes the franchise needs to fill in 2017, it can’t afford to spend all its cash on one or two players.

One big-name free agent that could be a consideration would be New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett.

Bennett, who will turn 30 on March 10, earned $5.1 million last year with the Super Bowl champions. Sportrac lists his market value at $6 million, which could make him the most expensive free-agent tight end on the market.

Wide receiver Antonio Brown just signed a five-year deal to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers worth $73 million, according to CBS Sports.

Jeffery and Jackson may not command that much of an asking price, but they’re sure to be more expensive than Bennett.

The Rams are one of the three teams that FanRagSports.com lists as the best landing spot for Bennett. The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Dolphins are the other two. But as FanRagSports.com suggests, Bennett could help the Rams’ two marquee players on offense—quarterback Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley—immensely next season.

“Giving Bennett to Goff would allow the young quarterback to have a release valve who also could add yards after the catch,” the site reports. “If (defenses) have to keep track of Bennett on shorter routes, they will be less able to focus on Gurley, who might finally see something less than eight men in the box.”

Bennett’s presence also would allow the Rams to focus using wide receiver Tavon Austin on more explosive plays.
