MLS Mascot Competition – Round 1

Yesterday we unveiled our plan to crown the best mascot in Major League Soccer. Today the competition kicks off. The competition will be a typical bracket competition with the winner of each matchup moving on to the next round. With 14 teams having mascots (none for New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Seattle), two teams needed to have a bye in the first round. Since Colorado and Dallas met in last year’s MLS Cup, it only seemed fair to give them the byes. Voting for the first round will end Sunday at midnight so support your team and get the word out to vote for your favorite mascot.

Without further ado, here are the first round matchups in the Total-MLS Mascot Competition.

Match 1: Crew Cat (Columbus Crew) vs Chivafighter (Chivas USA)

MLS Mascot Competition - Round 1

Crew Cat takes on Chivafighter in the first of our first round matchups. Crew Cat, who is nicknamed “America’s Hardest Working Mascot”, is a cat that wears a Crew uniform and a yellow hard hat. Chivafighter came from Mexico and according to his bio he lives in the Chivas USA locker room. Probably not the best smelling home.

Match 2: Cozmo (Los Angeles Galaxy) vs Spike (Vancouver Whitecaps)

The second matchup is a Western Conference tilt with Cozmo taking on Spike. Cozmo is a frog extraterrestrial who was beamed down to the HDC in 2003. Spike is a kingfisher bird who gets his name from his crown shaped head feathers.

Match 3: Q (San Jose Earthquakes) vs Leo the Lion (Real Salt Lake)

MLS Mascot Competition - Round 1

Another Western Conference dual pits Q against Leo the Lion. Q was a human who fell into a radioactive fissure during an earthquake. He craves coffee which makes him dance and run around at games. Leonardo, Leo for short, is a lion who is also an artist. He was born in Arches National Park.

Match 4: Timber Joey (Portland) vs Sparky (Chicago Fire)

MLS Mascot Competition - Round 1

Timber Joey takes on Sparky in Match 4. Timber Joey may not be a mascot in the sense that he wears an animal costume but he may be the favorite in the competition due to his recent popularity. Joey can be seen cutting big circles of a log each time the Timbers score a goal. Sparky is a dalmation with soccer ball spots. He has represented the Fire and the Chicago community since 1998.

Match 5: Slyde (New England Revolution) vs Blue (Sporting Kansas City)

MLS Mascot Competition - Round 1

Our last two matches feature four Eastern Conference teams as we start with Slyde against Blue. Slyde is a fox who has recently buffed up and added some more fur. Blue is the new mascot for Sporting KC this season. He is a black dog but little else is known about him.

Match 6: Dynamo Diesel (Houston Dynamo) vs Talon (DC United)

MLS Mascot Competition - Round 1

The final first round matchup sees Dynamo Diesel take on Talon. Diesel is a fox who debuted in Houston in 2007. His favorite music artist is Mike Jones and his favorite movie is The Fox and the Hound. Talon is an eagle named after the claw but he is not a mean bird. He apparently enjoys hugging fans.
