Munson here with loyal sidekick TONTO, and we’re going to analyze last night’s game. We really won’t explain it all; we’ll look for aspects that may not be obvious. Our remarks amy be controversial, but hey, Apaches are used to controversy, right? (TONTO: truculent Apache stare; him have too much firewater last night).
1) Our secondary stinks; period. Can’t cover, poor tackling. We have trouble on the double move? That’s like when Scott Ledoux got pummeled by Ken Norton, and the announcer said to him “Scott, you just weren’t able to avoid the straight right hands.” I am going to say something heretical: our loss to TCU may be a blessing. If we had gone to the Sugar Bowl with this secondary against atop team we’d have been killed. Plus if the Broncos didn’t travel well there (very likely) we’d have blown our rep for showing up and cost a lot of $, maybe even giving us a Conneticut style money loser. Every team we’ve played has exploited it; this was true to some extent BEFORE we lost Gavins. Hightower and Simmons attempts to tackle, or rather “knock”, were pathetic. Right TONTO? (TONTO nods solemnly, an Apache sign of approval/concern)
2) The D-line interior push on passing plays is virtually non-existent, with the exception of a couple of great plays by Winn. Winn gives us the only pressure there, and most teams can handle him if they’re allowed to focus on him, which they are ‘cuz Baker ain’t 100%, he just ain’t. Even when he is he’s a more of a run guy, as is T-n-T and Bacon. Don’t see where we’ll get that push next year unless Worthy comes up big.We weren’t getting very good pressure even on the edge although there was some. Combine with #1 and a good BCS worthy club would embarass us.
3) Related to #2 above (which is related to #1) our LBs are really run guys too. Hout, Tevis and Percy just don’t blitz, or if they do, they don’t effectively. We got nothing or very little with the blitz. Plus the corner blitz used to a staple; see #1.
4) Summary points 1-3; what should have been an annihilating victory was made much much prettier for SDSU because of some glaring weaknesses in our D. ‘Nuff said. TONTO? (TONTO GLARES AT MUNSON WITH A LOOK THAT SAYS IF I HAD MY SCALPING KNIFE AND WE WERE 100 MILES CLOSER TO THE MEXICAN BORDER YOU’D LOSE A GOOD PORTION OF THAT FINE HEAD OF HAIR YOU STILL RETAIN AT 59).
5) Mitch Burroughs fucks up at least once in every game he is in. His coughup of Kellen’s pass opened the door for SDSU, and I had visions of last year’s Nevada loss where he also opened the door. I know Martin fumbled; but for the number of hits he takes he’s pretty solid. Mitch ain’t. Compare him to Potter, who is much closer to Mitch in terms of touches and who has yet to fuck up. (TONTO (thinking): he’d be buried in an anthill with his eyelids cut off in the hot southwestern desert sun in my day)(ref Harold Robbins “The Carpetbaggers”)

6) Run game looked ok, against a very small D playing a 3-3-5. I hope Harper is ok; he never played, I wonder if he was suited up (he was on depth chart but Coach Pete is notorious for ignoring it. Just ok against and average Mtn. team would not cut it at the next i e BCS level.
7) Bold1 emerging! He got a interference call, and then his 41 yard catch to keep the drive alive on 3rd and long should have been the beginning of the nail into the coffin. You could just feel SDSU’s D having the air let out of their tires, the starch leach out of their shorts, the erection fade back into their pants. We scored on that drive (I think a FG) and at 45-14 it should have been lights out, Don Meredith should have been singing “The party’s over/it’s time to turn out the lights”. But uh uh-not happenin’. TONTO? (TONTO:DID HE SAY UH UH TOME, WHICH IN APACHE MEANS “ASSHOLE”? LATER DUDE-WE’LL BE CRUISIN’ CLOSER TO BORDER AND I’LL LET MY DEER-SKINNER KNIFE DO THE TALKIN’)

8) Kellen is a god. There will never be as accurate a passer on the blue. We’ll have good QBs, and a great one again, but this guy is unreal, and I’ve seen ’em all. JimmyMac comes closest: the share the same lack of running ability although Kellen makes Jimmy look like Gale Sayers. Jimmy had a slightly longer toss; slightly. But as a pocket passer, field general, D-reader, play & checkoff caller, “put-it-on-the-money-and-give-back-exact-change” there is no comparison. Kellen is THE MAN (ref the detestable Johnny Cochran D N R I P)

9) Matt Miller: “A STAR IS BORN”. Even when he doesn’t catch it he gets an interference call, and I suspect the DBs get away with a few with him. His slant move is so good he can use it on the “go” route. We’ll be enjoying him for years.
10) SHOE: we won’t be enjoying him for years, ‘cuz this is his last one. Let’s enjoy him now. “Oh, what a night!” (Frankie Valli) He’s the Bronco story writ large. Local unrecruited kid, not fast, in with speedsters like Titus and acrobats like Austin, he plied his trade, improved his strengths, filed away at his weaknesses, and emerges as a bona fide Div. #1 WR, and an elite one at that on an elite team. Kudos! And I hope you stay to contribute at the program. TONTO? (TONTO: “Nene pach e’ trava soh” TRANSLATION: “I’d ride with him anytime”)

So there it is; submitted for your approval (ref Rod Serling “The Twilight Zone”). Maybe you saw it defferently, maybe you saw other things, maybe you saw it the same. Point is you saw it, we saw it, and we share it. I’ll ride off now, and look forward to perhaps visiting with you after next week’s. game. ‘Til then, vaya con dios kimo sabes! (ref “The Lone Ranger”)
