Earlier today, Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers seemed poised to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Clippers when discussions of a package deal between the two organizations seemed to heat up.
However, as of now it appears that Rivers to Boston will not happen.
According to a tweet LA Times’ Los Angeles Clippers beat writer Brad Turner, the team is “moving forward” without Rivers in their plans, and are now prepared to offer their vacant head coach position to either Brian Shaw or Lionel Hollins.
Shaw is a veteran NBA assistant, as he spent 2005-2011 on the Los Angeles Lakers’ bench and joined the Indiana Pacers coaching staff in 2011. He was considered for the Lakers’ head coaching job after legendary coach Phil Jackson retired in 2011, but was passed over in favor of Mike Brown. Shaw is revered as one of the better up-and-coming coaches in the NBA.
Hollins, on the other hand, is on the market because the Memphis Grizzlies chose to not renew his contract this offseason, following a rift between Hollins and Grizzlies’ management. He has an excellent resume, as he transformed a struggling Grizzlies franchise into a contender in the difficult Western Conference. This season, he led the Grizzlies to their best season in franchise history, as they finished the regular season with an impressive 56-26 record, before losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.
Both are worthy candidates, but Hollins should be the one that the Grizzlies target first, with Shaw being the backup plan.
