The Revolution plays DC United in a US Open Cup play-in game on Tuesday night. While I think DC may be further along their team-building path, New England now has more scoring threats. The catch is that New England traditionally treats early rounds of non-league competitions as reserve matches. On the other hand, DC took the NY Red Bull epiphany head on to the tune of four goals against and will play again on Friday night against Houston. Coach Ben Olson might not field a full strength team either because of this.
The Revolution’s Ousmane Dabo is expected to play for the first time this season on Tuesday night. Look for Sainey Nyassi to pick up minutes as well. All of these guys are professionals, so I’m sure the level of competition in practice will force some of them to sharpen up their games. I doubt it will come this season, but I expect this is the type of game where home-grown player Diego Fagundez could see his first team debut. Check out the Feilhaber videos to see Benny and Diego chatting during practice. If things work out in New England, Diego could challenge Benny for minutes in a couple of years.
