The Revolution had the lead going into halftime but would not be able to hold on as the New York Red Bulls put together a two-goal second half to beat the Revs 3-2. This loss is a painful one for the Revs as they lead twice tonight at Gillette Stadium where they have gone 5-2-2 so far, this season.
Revs Head Coach Jay Heaps not happy after this one saying “Unfortunately, we give goals away for fun and defensively we are just too soft, too weak”
Three out of five goals came in some very quick five minutes as Teal Bunbury got the scoring going for the Revolution 21 minutes in. The New Yok Red Bulls responded in the 23 minute with a Bradley Wright-Phillips goal that tied the game 1-1. The Revolution would be quick to regain that lead again on a Lee Nguyen goal 26 minutes in.
The Revolution would head into the half playing some of the best soccer we have seen them play all season long. But that came to a crashing stop, just over 10 minutes into the second half the Red Bulls would get a penalty kick and Daniel Royer drove it home tying the game for New York.
Gonzalo Veron found the back of the net in the 90th minute for New York securing the win for the Red Bulls who advance to 8-8-2 and are currently 7th in the East.
With this loss, the Revolution fall to 5-9-5 on the season and are 10th in the East. Only one team is behind the Revolution in the East and that is D.C. United who is on the heels with a 5-11-3 record.
Lucky for the Revolution they will have a chance at redemption as they will take on the Red Bulls again a week from Thursday in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals. The Revs will continue their MLS schedule on July 22nd when the LA Galaxy come to town.
