Allen Iverson, the NHL Stadium Series, Joe Lunardi‘s top seeds and Manchester City highlight the Sunday edition of The Inscriber Digital Magazine’s News and Notes for March 2, 2014
- Sixers Retire Allen Iverson’s Jersey : One of the most prolific scoring guard to ever play in NBA history, the Philadelphia 76ers retired Allen Iverson’s jersey Saturday night. A four-time NBA scoring champion, NBA MVP and 11-time All-Star, the top overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft out of Georgetown would win Rookie Of the year and at 6’0, Iverson would go on to also be named NBA All-Star MVP twice(2001,2005). A modern-day pioneer of hip-hop fashion courtside and the killer crossover dribble on it, Iverson’s postseason average of 29.7 points per game is second only to Michael Jordan, and his 26.7 points per game ranks sixth all-time.
- Blackhawks Rout Pens, 5-1 in NHL Stadium Series : Thanks to two goals from Jonathan Toews, the depending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks routed the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-1 at a very snowy Solider Field. Blackhawks left-wing Patrick Sharp would add a goal and an assist as Chicago dominated the Penguins in front of an estimated crowd of over 69,000. James Neal would provide the lone Penguins tally.
- Florida, Syracuse, Wichita State and Arizona Projected Top Seeds : According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, Florida, Kansas, Arizona and the undefeated Wichita State Shockers are projected to be awarded No.1 seeds. As of press time, Lunardi has the Gators slotted the no.1 seed in the South(Memphis), the Wildcats the top seed in the West(Anaheim), the Shockers number one in the Midwest(Indianapolis) and the Orange the top seed in the East(New York)
- Manchester City Stuns Sunderland, Wins Capitol One Cup, 3-1 : Thanks to back-to-back goals from Yaya Toure(55’) and Samir Nasri(56’), defending FA Cup champion Manchester City collected another piece of silverware in downing the Sunderland Black Cats 3-1 at the Ethidad. Jesus Navas would add the final tally for the Citizens at the 90th minutes, and Fabio Borini would give the lone answer for Sunderland.
