Derrick Henry – 2016, Round 2
Derrick Henry was on the same level as Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. He’s a big-bodied power back who garnered a ton of hype heading into the NFL Draft. He was coming off of an explosive season in 2015 where he rushed for over 2,200 yards and 28 touchdowns. Surprisingly, Henry went through the first round on draft day without getting selected.
The Tennesee Titans ended up snagging him in the second round and had high hopes for Henry to develop into a bonafide star. He didn’t get the start during his first two seasons as DeMarco Murray was in the picture. But Henry finally started his first full season this past year and rushed for 1,059 yards and 12 touchdowns. Year one was solid for Henry as a starter, but he’s got to capitalize on the opportunity in 2019, which is his contract year.
Bo Scarbrough – 2018, Round 7
A year before Bo Scarbrough was even ready to enter the NFL, he was being viewed as a potential first-round pick. Again, scouts were being fooled by his size and assumed that his bruiser running style would be attractive to NFL front offices. Scarbrough didn’t kill the stat sheets at Bama and definitely didn’t seem to reach his full potential while there.
The first round came and went as Scarborough clearly didn’t get picked. Many assumed he was a fourth or fifth rounder at the time, but Bo didn’t get a call until the final round last season. The Dallas Cowboys drafted Scarbrough in seventh-round, and he wouldn’t even make their final roster. Currently, Scarbrough is on the Seattle Seahawks roster, which marks his third team in less than a year. If I had to guess, I’m going to assume that Scarbrough will join the other recent handful of Bama backs who will not have longevity in the NFL.
