WASHINGTON – Per multiple media reports, the NHL has awarded the 2015 NHL Winter Classic to the Washington Capitals.
With the official announcement set to be made early Saturday, no official opponent has been named, nor an official site has been chosen. Potential locations for the seventh outdoor game include Nationals Park, RFK Stadium or FedEx Field in neighboring Ashburn, Virginia.
With previous classics having been played in Buffalo, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, with the sixth up-coming game between Original Six rivals, Toronto and Detroit to be played at Michigan Stadium, the seventh in our nation’s capital is a sign of the growing popularity of both the annual outdoor event and the NHL itself.
The potential short list of possible opponents is heading by arch-nemesis Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins followed by the always-hated New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins.
In what could be a ratings bonanza—as well as a potential rematch from 2011—don’t be too shocked if you see Crosby vs Ovechkin – Part II outdoors, simply based on the competitive nature between the two superstars as well as a marquee match-up of the premier faces of the NHL.
