CHESTNUT HILL, MA– It was a close game at the half, in fact, it was a close game halfway through the third quarter but that is where the wheels fell off the Boston Colleges bus and the Irish never looked back leading them to their second win of the season beating Boston College 49-20. With that win, they advanced their overall record to 2-1 on the season.
This round of the Holy War goes to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and this will be the 6th time in a row the Irish have won it. The last time Boston College could beat Notre Dame was November 8, 2008, when they beat the Irish 17-0.
In front of a sellout crowd of 44,500 at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Boston College’s looked like they were playing for the upset. But as the game went on that drive seemed to leave them.
Addazio’s Eagles came into this game after being upset and embarrassed by Wake Forrest last week 34-10. They came in saying they were angry and that they just wanted to get back out on the field and prove people wrong. They were able to do that for a half but a half is not good enough in sports especially football it needs to be a full game.
How much longer does Boston College want to have these teams struggling to reach a .500 record? Addazio is not the worst coach to be the head coach at Boston College but he is no Tom O’Brien or Tom Coughlin. I feel Boston College deserves better, at this day in age making a bowl game every year should not be a perplexing task as they made the Quick Lane Bowl last year with a 7-6 record.
Boston College should once again be competitive with the top teams in the NCAA but I do not see that happening under the control of Steve Addazio. He has had plenty of chances and plenty of talent it is time to cut ties and rebuild a historic program, losing to a not so good Fighting Irish team by 20+ points is unacceptable. The program should not be like this thought the 2020 season when Addazio’s contract goes up.
Looking back at the game it took a rather wild turn as the first half was a defensive showdown and the second have was all offense (at least for the Irish). We started the game off with both teams going three-and-out before Boston College would put a drive together that ended in a 38-yard field goal by Lichtenberg.
Boston College had a challenging time controlling two people and that was scrambling QB Brandon Wimbush and Star Running Back Josh Adams who together made this BC defense look silly at times in the second half. In this game Wimbush set a new Notre Dame record by rushing for 207 yards, that is the most by a QB in a single game in Notre Dame history. Not to mention in this game Wimbush himself scored 4 of the 7 touchdowns.
But there were some positives form Boston college in this game as the defense in the first half looked very good and to open the second they put a good drive together. The drive started with a 10-yard rush by Hilliman followed by a 29-yard rush by Hilliman getting BC in the Red Zone. The drive ended two plays later when Anthony Brown connected with Charlie Callinan for a touchdown.
The real turning point of this game was the Boston College interception in the third quarter when Brown was intercepted on a long ball intended for Kobay White. Should that ball have been caught by White totally different story Boston College would have been right back in the game, but I felt at that time it was very deflating to this team.
It was a tough loss for Boston College as I thought they had an honest chance at winning this game. Hopefully, they will be able to bounce back this time for a full 60- minute effort and not a just a half.
But the Boston College schedule will not be getting any easier as they will prepare to take on Clemson next Saturday in South Carolina.
