The waiting will take a little longer and for fans and analysts of the Dolphins, the Miami Dolphins will unveil a version of Eagles South or some form of Oregon Beach, but certainly not at OTAs. Just to inform the ever so knowledgable Miami Dolphins fan, OTAs stand for organized team activities. It’s practicing without pads and in shorts. The practices are voluntary and there are restrictions on time and contact.
For Dolphins players, it means enduring upper 80 degree late May afternoons and wiping the sweat off their arms and legs. The sticky afternoons are commonplace to the Dolphins vet, but to the rookies who arrive from near and far or places that once had snow on the ground, Davie can be an adjustment.
Right now, the Dolphins have had some time to acclimate to each other in the offseason. Third year quarterback Ryan Tannehill has worked all offseason with Mike Wallace. The rumblings of Koa Misi moving to the middle linebacker role and second year defensive end Dion Jordan gaining weight (243 to 265lbs) are no longer rumors.
Lastly, the Dolphins appear to have another new offense they are tinkering with after hiring Bill Lazor to be a more explosive and efficient offensive force in the division, conference, and league. What’s more is Lazor took a young quarterback commodity in Nick Foles to make him one of the most prolific passers in the NFL- 27 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Consequently, Ryan Tannehill had more yards (3,913) but more interceptions 17. It will be up to Tannehill to improve with the help of a new and hopefully supportive coach in Lazor.
At this point, the Miami Dolphins are right where they should be. Testing the waters, working out their draft picks, and getting through the voluntary OTA period unscathed and off the injured reserve.
Dolphins still have some holes and weaknesses on their team. Of them, the linebacker positions weren’t addressed in the draft on the outside. In addition, what happens with Cortland Finnegan should he get injured, who is there to replace him? Can Ryan Tannehill show he and Mike Wallace are the second coming of Marino to Clayton? Is the offensive line fixed and will they keep Ryan Tannehill upright?
As it stands, Dolphins fans are gearing up, for what figures to be a promising summer, yet one with much potential to carry over into the season.
