Patience is key for Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff

Super Bowl XLIX - New England Patriots v Seattle Seahawks

If I were to tell you on draft day last May that both Quarterback Jared Goff and Carson Wentz will not enter the 2016 NFL season as starters, you probably won’t believe me. However if I told you that all the rookie Quarterback hype has been focused on a 4th pick out of Mississippi state. ..well, you might think I’m crazy but that is just the unpredictability of the NFL. The “any given Sunday” mentality is what draws us to love football.

That and seeing the best of the best, who is number one! I now take you back to last May, on a perfect Los Angeles afternoon at L.A. Live, Ram fans wait for a perfect pick, best of the best, “THEEE number 1”!. As I stand in the crowd full of fellow Ram fans and family (Ramily) I have the great honor of meeting coach Jeff Fisher’s sisters and niece.

They were definitely a please to talk, many laughs of how the coach was as a little kid mixed with anticipation for our number 1. One of the coach’s sister then asked me “who do you want my brother to pick?”. I then told her, “well…I don’t think these Quarterbacks have the caliber of being an instant impact starter, but I would have to go with Carson Wentz because he reminds me of a Joe Flacco prototype”. She then said “instant impact starter, that’s alot to ask for”. I then told her “Its almost going to be a decade since we made it to the playoffs, we desperately need an instant impact starter”.

As Roger Goodell announces “for the first pick of 2016 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select…Jared Goff, Quarterback out of University of California. As everyone cheers around me, I feel a sense of disappointment as my head hangs low. One of Jeff Fisher’s then comes to me and says “it’s ok Art, my brother knows what he’s doing”.

I then tell her “I hope, but please tell your brother to put Jared in the weight room!” As we approach the final preseason game, Jared Goff has one last chance to solidify his place, however not as a starter but as a second string Quarterback. Second year man Sean Mannion is looming over to become Case Keenum’s backup and he has accomplished a solid back to back win performance in week one and two of the preseason. Yes it is very still early to call Jared Goff “THEEE number 1” as he struggles to become “THEEE number 2” but who knows what will occur, he could very well bring the Rams back to playoff contenders and win rookie of the year…but like I said before that’s the unpredictability of this sport
