The Patriots were back in action today and for the first time this season they were in full pads. As Bill Belichick said the other day now it is time to start evaluating players, now that the pads are on all bets are off. Today’s practice was very run oriented as we did not see too much passing from the Patriots. It was also very unseasonably cool out today as it barely made it over 70 degrees and it windy. Not the best condition for training camp as you want it hot and humid for conditioning. With Celtics head Coach Brad Stevens and Kevin Faulk along with many other notable Patriots Alumni in attendance, today was a big day for the Patriots.
Joe Cardona made his return and the first appearance of the camp today after being out a couple of days as he was finishing his Navy commitment. Amendola and Mitchell were also back today but were limited as they were doing a lot of work with the training staff at different points of the practice. Defensive Back David Jones also join Amendola and Mitchell in those drills.
Still no sign of Rob Ninkovich at Patriots camp yet as he has missed the first 3 days with what Bill Belichick called a “personal issue”. Cody Hollister was also not in attendance today no reason for his absence has been released yet.
Jacoby Brissette continues to impress me this year in camp as his long ball has improved since last year and he just looks more comfortable and confident when in the pocket. Brisette finished the day completing 7 of 10 passes. Jimmy Garoppolo had probably his best day of camp so far throwing no interceptions well taking his time in the pocket and letting the play develop before throwing, Jimmy G went 4 of 6 in his snaps today. Tom Brady also looks in mid-season form already throwing 4-6 in his snaps. Brady also threw his first interception of training camp on a ball thrown to Jacob Holliston in 1-on-1 drills. The ball was intercepted by Jordan Richard who was credited with his third interception of camp.
One thing to look out for now is Harmon as he went down and was very slow to get up after a very hard fall in the end zone. Trainers worked on Harmon’s right knee on the sideline and he did not return to practice. Brandon Bolden also left practice with an unknown injury and did not return.
But on a positive note, the Play of the day was a perfect flea flicker that went Brady to Lewis, back to Brady and a long bomb throw to Edelman which was caught.
The Patriots will next practice on Sunday morning 7/29/17 the practice is open to the public and starts at 9:15 am.
