With the combine starting this week, rumors are really starting to leak out about off season plans. Traditionally, a vast majority of those rumors are just that, rumors. No validity except to try & mask any real interest in a player.
Dolphins Twitter has been abuzz (as it usually is). So many of us with different ideas of what we want to see happen & what we think will happen. Every player that gets released causes a discussion of whether Miami should go after him.
What do we know? We know that this team has a lot of holes, especially on defense. We know that we desperately need some OL help, especially at G. We know that we have 4 starters who are FA & are likely to lose at least 2 of them.
What we don’t know despite what people who have “sources” on Twitter say is how they are going to attack this off season. Right now, until the clock hits go on March 9th, we are left to speculate.
Here is what I think will happen (not what I want to happen)
1. They restructure Suh for extra cap $$.
2. They cut Jennings for more cap $$.
3. They resign Miller & Vernon.
4. They add a free agent OG. Not sure who as of yet. Alex Boone, Jahri Evans come to mind..
5. They add at least 1 free agent LB. Would expect it to be someone with a little size. Irvin, Whitehead, Derrick Johnson. Names like that.
6. They add a free agent CB. Hot name has been Pac Man Jones, but I could see them spending some more $$ & aiming higher.
I don’t want to speculate on the draft yet because it is very dependent on what is done in the next few weeks. The above items would not be my approach. I prefer to keep Miller, pursue a veteran OG & some lesser young names to help on D for cheap. But I am guessing that this administration will spend freely. I believe that to be a mistake as we have seen the track record of free agency & overpaying for lesser players.
I am hoping that this regime does take a long term view & decides to build through the draft while supplementing carefully with low priced free agents. But my opinion & feeling as of now is that the cash register is about to open again.
