Players the Cowboys Will Target on the Last Day

The Cowboys have landed two blue chip prospects that will be day one starters in Zack Martin and Demarcus Lawrence. This defense, however, still has some quality depth issues and with the trade up to get Lawrence we got wiped out on some potential starter type players.

We saw these prospect visitors come off the board:

  • Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State
  • Kareem Martin, DE, North Carolina
  • Will Clarke, DE, Virginia
  • Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
  • Josh Huff, WR, Oregon
  • Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi State

The Cowboys will have some options going into the final day of the draft, but we could enter some territory where we draft a player we did not actually visit with.

For me, I like Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton in the 4th round. He had a solid career at Princeton and monster Senior Bowl. He wasn’t an official visit, but Garrett has the inside track on him with his coaching ties to Princeton. We could use another 3-tech to rotate with Melton, and Reid has that coveted position flex we hear about all the time. Reid can play the 1-tech as well. I’m not sure Reid will last to our #18 pick in the 4th, but if he’s there, take him.

If the Cowboys want to put the final touches on a completely revamped offensive line for now and the future, then the Cowboys should consider Dakota Dozier, OG, Furman. Outside of Martin, Dozier was the other offensive lineman that had a dominating showing and his combine backed it up. I’m surprised he’s still available. But if you add Dozier, you are set across the line and have depth for this season. Dozier already has the experience with zone-blocking at Furman, so the transition would be seamless. Keep an eye on this pick.

When is cornerback depth getting addressed?

Interestingly enough, the Cowboys met with several cornerbacks, so the 4th round could be where we see cornerback selected. I honestly would feel lukewarm on using a 4th on a corner, but we’ll see how the picks in front of us shake out. If the Cowboys feel good about Claiborne and believe Webb will improve, then adding a CB will be on the backburner. However, if that is not the case, then with the 4th round pick we could add one of these two guys:

  • Bashaud Breeland, CB, Clemson
  • Walt Aikens, CB, Liberty

And other players to watch in later rounds:

  • Xavius Boyd, LB, Western Kentucky
  • Demetri Goodson, CB, Baylor
  • Kaycee Ike, OT, UAB
  • Howard Jones, LB, Shepherd
  • Ken Bishop, DT, Northern Illinois
  • Matt Hall, OT, Belhaven
  • Davon Coleman, DE, Arizona State
  • Derek Thompson, QB, North Texas
  • Garrett Gilbert, QB, SMU
  • Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia (Pro Day)
  • Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor
  • Kerry Hyder, DT, Texas Tech
  • Chris Whaley, DT, Texas
  • Ben Malena, RB, Texas A&M
  • Josh Harris, RB, Wake Forest
  • Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsburg
  • JC Copeland, FB, LSU

Players that were non-visits, but I would consider

  • Prince Shembo, LB, Notre Dame
  • Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh
  • Storm Johnson, RB, UCF
  • AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama
  • TJ Jones, WR, Notre Dame
  • Corey Linsley, C, Ohio State
  • James Stone, C, Tennesse
  • Kevin Norwood, WR, Alabama
  • Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech

In past drafts, the Cowboys have had some nice returns with the 4th round pick, so hopefully the Cowboys will continue to work off from a nice start to this 2014 draft class. We need all the help we can get to get us over that 8-8 hump.
