By now you’ve heard the terrible news about Orlando Scandrick’s season ending ACL and MCL injury. The discussion has now shifted to who is going to replace Scandrick? We’ve already heard Defensive Backs Coach Henderson say Tyler Patmon would fill in the nickel role and I’m on board with that. I like what I saw from Patmon’s rookie campaign last year, and by most accounts he’s built more positive momentum this year.
What I’m not liking is the talk of Morris Claiborne possibly starting on the outside opposite Brandon Carr, it’s mind boggling. You have a player that has not done much of anything good while here in Dallas, so to think the switch is going to flip this year is a crack pipe dream.
We’ve seen this song and dance every year. Claiborne does well enough in training camp, but he never plays in the preseason, so we’re suppose to feel confident in a player that has rust every regular season? C’mon man. Maybe they’ll give him a half to show what he can and cannot do before they put Byron Jones out there.
Byron Jones was brought in here to cover some really good receivers in the NFC East, whether that be Pierre Garcon, Victor Cruz or Odell Beckham. Claiborne can’t cover those guys. Opening game against the Giants could be an ugly first half in the secondary if he’s out there bumbling around.
Our saving grace will be the defensive front. DeMarcus Lawrence has really amped up his game and looks poised to have a breakout sophomore campaign. I like how the rotation is shaping up across the line and we’ll finally see those “waves” of pressure as a factor. The pass rush should help the secondary out — I’m hoping!
How do you guys feel about Claiborne potentially starting? Take the poll and sound off!
