Well now that we have let the surprise pick of C/OG Travis Frederick pick settle in, its time to move onward to the 2nd-3rd rounds which begin 5:30 (CST) The Frederick pick did address some offensive line issues, so we’ll see how it pans out. I will say this, of the players the Cowboys brought in for pre-draft visits, Frederick was the last one for the National visits, everyone they brought in was drafted, so it looks like we may not address o-line on friday.
The Cowboys picks for Friday are: 2nd (15th), 3rd (12th from 49ers), 3rd (18th)
I think the 2nd round is where the Cowboys select a player for Kiffin. Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU, or Kawann Short DT, Purdue fill immediate needs. You also have Margus Hunt, DE, SMU, all three of these guys were also pre-draft visits. Cyprien can give us some much needed comfort/depth at safety. Short is a playmaking beast and would be an instant impact player in rotation and a long-term solution in Kiffin’s 4-3 Kiffin was impressed by him at the Senior Bowl. Hunt gives us a solution for Spencer after he finishes this year and would give us solid pass rushing depth.
If the Cowboys stay on the offensive side, keep an eye for Giovani Bernard, RB, NC; Marcus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State; Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor. The Cowboys needs to provide depth at RB, and WR could be considered to fill-in for the oft injured Miles Austin. All three were pre-draft visits as well.
The 3rd round and up is where the Cowboys will be leaning more on the scouting department’s reports and game tape. We have (2) 3rd round picks, and we should stay put and make sounds picks here. If RB wasn’t taken in the 2nd round, this is the area the Cowboys should lock-in on a RB like Joseph Randle, Montee Ball, or Leveon Bell. I would consider adding a LB here as well to protect us from injury.
Good luck to us all. Go Cowboys!
