For the seventh time in franchise history, the Boston Red Sox are American League East Champions. The Yankees may have won the game but the Red Sox win the division. So the Sox will be celebrating like it is 2004 in Yankees Stadium when they beat the Yankees to advance to the World Series.
We all remember the last time the Red Sox won the AL East they brought home the hardware in 2013.
Clay Buchholz got the start for the Sox and he wheeled and dealed all night giving the Red Sox his best performance of the year so far so far in a game that meant a lot. Buchholz made it through six innings only giving up one hit and two walks.
The Red Sox bullpen would not let the rest of the team down this time as they kept the Yankees to four hits for the rest of the game. Ziegler, Uehara, Kimbrel, and Kelly all came in after Buchholz to close the game out and all pitched lights out, besides Kimbrel who walked four straight giving up the only run. Kelly may have given up the grand slam walk off but it was Kelly who put him in this situation, no blame on Kelly for this one.
For the longest time the game remained scoreless but in the top of the 8th inning, the Red Sox broke that tie with a clutch Mookie Betts double that scored two. Ortiz also scored on a passed ball in the 8th.
Even if the Red Sox lost this game they still would have clinched the AL East as the Blue Jays lost to the Orioles 3-2.
So celebrate it up Red Sox fans we are the 2016 AL East Champions!
