The great Pedro Martinez has not played a game sense 2004 and his number 45 will never be worn again. The Red Sox announced Monday afternoon that they will retire Martinez’s jersey on July 28th when they take on the Chicago White Sox.
The jersey retirement ceremony will happen only two days after Martinez is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Martinez very well known for his leadership and lights out pitching which helped the Red Sox break the 86 year curse back in 2004.
Martinez pitched a total of seven seasons with the Red Sox, going 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA. In his career he won a total of 3 Cy Young awards (1997, 1999, and 2000). Martinez won two Cy Young awards with the Red Sox and one with the Expos.
The last jersey to be retired in Boston was Jim Rice’s back in 2008. This is very well deserved for Martinez as he will go down as one of the all time Red Sox greats.
