The Red Sox finished out their series against their historical rival the New York Yankees last night with a 4-1 loss. Overall the Sox won their final series against the Bronx Bombers 3 games to 1. The Sox out scored the Yanks 20-14 showing signs of offensive power with 8 home runs in the series with the young guys carrying the load as usual as Betts, Swihart, and Shaw each had two a piece. The pitching also performed well with an ERA just north of 3.5 and outside of game three they limited the walks to minimum. Rick Porcello was the highlighted pitcher in the series going 8 innings giving up four while striking out 8. His performance lead the Red Sox to a big 10-4 win.
The important part coming out of the series is the fact that the Red Sox proved they can win against a real contender. Even with the Yankees struggles of late, only winning 7 out of their last 12, which for a playoff team this time in the year is sub par at best, they went into the new Yankee Stadium and took 3 out of 4 games. As far as the future for the Red Sox there is a big overhaul coming in the off season with new upper management in place and Dave Dombrowski taking charge there is bright future for Boston baseball again.
The way this franchise is going is in the right direction trying to get out with the old players like Ortiz and in with the new prospects relying on the future stars like Mookie Betts and Xander Bogarts. They have a good future and a shot to compete for a wild card in 2016, but looking farther forward into 2017 they have the potential to be a division winner, with a real competition to win the World Series in 2019, if they continue the process of devolving their young prospects. However for the majority of Boston sports fans they want to see winning now and begin honest the Red Sox are not in that position right now . They simply do not have the quality MLB talent to win in the junior circuit right now. They will get there but let these young prospects develop and give them the time needed and you will see a winning team by 2020.
