It’s being reported that the Dolphins approached Grimes about restructuring his deal and that he declined. On Twitter many are speculating that it’s his wife, Miko, who pulled these strings. Shortly after the season ended, Brent reportedly was open to redoing his contract.
Releasing Grimes would save the Dolphins $6.5 million. Miami would not get that cap money until the middle of May. Grimes’ play last year and his age makes him a target for release. To be honest, this was the right move from both parties!
With Grimes now likely done in Miami the Dolphins now have another hole to fill in the secondary. It was reported that Miami is in talks with the Eagles about Byron Maxwell who is much better in zone coverage, which Miami runs, than the man-to-man run in Philadelphia. The details of those talks are not clear yet. We also need CBs that is physical from the line of scrimmage plus Maxwell being 6’2 helps.
Vance Joseph defense is more zone than man so hopefully he will have a bounce back season! There also been reports that Kiko Alonso is also in the trade discussions if this is true it would be a steal if he can stay healthy.
With the Dolphins now looking for more corner help, it’s likely that the draft will become a big part of their overhaul at the position. The Dolphins could be targeting Florida corner Vernon Hargreaves with their 8th overall pick. It also makes the rest of free agency interesting because Miami may be targeting Bengals corner Adam Jones.
What the Dolphins do next is not clear and there is talk that Miami may also release Jordan Cameron who they have yet to come to terms with on a restructured deal. It very well may be a turning point for the Dolphins this off-season and a rebuild could be in store.
