The Miami Dolphins are continuing their search for a running back after the Denver Broncos matched the team’s offer sheet to C.J. Anderson.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dolphins are hosting free agent Chris Johnson for a visit on Wednesday.
Once a 2,000-yard rusher for the Tennessee Titans, Johnson spent the 2015 season with the Arizona Cardinals—rushing for 814 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. He produced at least 100 rushing yards in four games for the Cardinals, but he broke his leg in late November and missed the rest of the season.
The Dolphins have a need at running back after losing Lamar Miller to the Houston Texans and missing out on Anderson, who will return to Denver. Miami signed Anderson to a four-year, $18 million offer sheet last week, but the Broncos surprisingly matched the deal.
Johnson, 30, could pair with Jay Ajayi to give the Dolphins a brand new 1-2 punch at running back in 2016.
A first round-pick in 2007, Johnson began his NFL career with six straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons, including a 2,006-yard season in 2008. He played one year for the New York Jets in 2014 before landing with the Cardinals late in training camp last summer.
This is the first reported interest in Johnson on open market. However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Johnson was planning on having a new deal in place this week, with “multiple teams” interested.
