Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields remains in the recovery phase from a concussion he suffered in Week 1.
According to Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, Shields still isn’t ready to play and will miss Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.
“He’s making some improvements,” McCarthy said, via ESPN. “He will not be available this week.”
Shields suffered his latest head injury while making a tackle against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the season opener. He’ll miss his third consecutive game.
Green Bay’s Pro Bowl cornerback is no stranger to concussions. He suffered a head injury against the Dallas Cowboys last season and missed four games, including the Packers’ win over the Washington Redskins in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Not having Shields could be an issue for the Packers in Week 5, especially with Eli Manning and his trio of receivers headed for Lambeau Field. Green Bay struggled without Shields in back-to-back games, as Stefon Diggs (184 yards) and Marvin Jones (205 yards) carved up the Packers’ secondary for almost 400 combined receiving yards.
Now, the Packers must contend with Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard while Shields continues his recovery.
Shields, 28, has 18 career interceptions, with at least two picks in his first six NFL seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in 2014.
