Exactly one year ago to the day, August 17th, Brad Childress introduced Brett Favre to the practice field to begin his work with the Minnesota Vikings. Favre would go on to lead the team to the NFC championship game before ending the season on an interception and a loss to the eventual champion New Orleans Saints.
After another summer and off-season, Brett Favre has decided, according to all reports, to come back to the Vikings on August 17th of this year.
Jay Glazer of Fox reported that Favre told some of his Viking confidants that he is “back in”. While I think it’s ridiculous that Favre needed to be persuaded to coming back with a team that may be the most talented in the NFC, but I guess his ego needed to be stroked a little more.
So, as we un-anxiously wait for his plane to land and once again gush reluctantly that he makes the Vikings one of the favorites in the NFC to reach the Super Bowl, we once again have played Favre’s game of our own (the media’s) doing.
The average fan doesn’t care about Favre until early September to see if he suits up or not. Me included, I just want to see him play. If he retires, we’ll know early in the season, and we’ll plan for his five years until the Hall of Fame.
But, once again, anyone who believed Favre was actually retiring, was once again wrong. And if you put any money that he was staying retired, well, that wasn’t a bright decision.
So your Minnesota Vikings should be one of, if not thee, top team in the NFC next season, Favre should have another, though probably not 2009-like, great season with the dynamic options on offense, and he’ll try to evade that vicious interception curse that has ended every season since he started this whole retired-then-return deal.
Like him or not, excited or not, even care about it or not, Favre’s back.
