As we approach the eve of Training Camp, the Miami Dolphins head into this week with renewed optimism that will lead to a playoff berth.
Yesterday head coach Joe Philbin used the word “fun” to describe what the fans will experience throughout the course of the season. Ask Dolphins Twitter that question come November, check.
He also reminded fans to “keep the faith” as if this year’s stronger together mantra is a close second on t-shirt printing boutiques. Wait, no more Navy Seal talks and Warrior memorabilia?
The Dolphins under Philbin are 23-25 and haven’t done anything that exciting except falter when the calendar turns December and rinsed and repeated with big name acquisitions in the 2013-14-15 off seasons (Wallace-Albert-Suh).
For fans rooting for a winner, a bunch of “we’ve got incredible facilities” chatter isn’t going to bring them through the gates. Victories leading to the playoffs will, not bright Aqua seats.
Those knowledgable Dolfans who’ve been through the wringer cringe when they here about Branden Albert and his first start being week one. Not to mention, it doesn’t help matters when the guru of offensive lines (Philbin) wants him to get some work in a preseason game. Can someone remind the younger fans about Jake Long?
That should be a cause for every fans concern given that Albert is recovering from an MCL and ACL tear and subsequent surgery. Isn’t Albert’s job to protect Ryan Tannehill’s blindside?
Lost in the conversation with Philbin was the running back talk whether Jay Ajayi and Miller will split reps.
Lastly, if a fan had bet on the Dolphins before the signing of Suh, they would’ve had a larger payout provided the Phins win the Super Bowl. Suh makes this team better, but he can’t run, kick, and throw the football.
If I had to put my mark on this particular off season, I’d say it’s more about trying to keep the faith because in reality, most fans have had that faith.
The question is, is Philbin’s faith in this season a shot in the dark?
