Small School Scouting Notebook: October 24th

Bo Levi MitchellAnother week in the small school notebook, and we’ll take a look at the reigning champs of the FCS level in Eastern Washington and how their prospects have fared last weekend against Sacramento State. Also, we’ll look at Division II powerhouse Delta State, as well as prospects from Humboldt State and Western Oregon.

Scouting notes thanks to Seneca Gant, Sean Welek, and Trey Randall.

Eastern Washington

Bo Levi Mitchell has great arm strength and accuracy when throwing the ball on every route.  He stays in the pocket and delivers strikes.  Decent footwork but can fixed, he is a very smart player that knows what to do when the pocket protection breaks down.  Great touch when delivering the deep ball and great touch when he delivers sideline passes.  He does throw off his back foot often when he starts to get in to a grove, which has resulted in scoring opportunities missed.  He has the ability because of his arm strength and accuracy fit passes into tight coverage.  He has impressive accuracy, and precise and spreads the ball around to all of his receivers and backs out of the backfield.  He comes from under the center very smoothly.

-Nicholas Edwards is a solid receiver he runs good routes and has nice hands with touch.  He is a bit inconsistent game in and game out, but very good in the red zone when call upon.  He has breakaway speed and the ability to go up and get the ball at its highest point. When he is out of the passing game he is solid in the running game with his blocking.

-Junior Brandon Kaufman has great size and great hands to go with it as a receiver.  He is a stout receiver with the ability to go up and get the ball at its highest point.  He has solid awareness and good flexibility which has allowed him to make those difficult turns for the ball.  Great blocker on running plays and decent hands when the ball is thrown to him.

-Left tackle Gabriel Jackson is the reason that the quarterback has been upright and protected throughout this entire season.  He has great bend in his knees and his base is solid.  However, the most impressive attribute is his punch power, he has dominated at the point of attack this season and shows solid hand placement when moving his opponent out of the play.  Good technique and good footwork is why he has been so successful thus far this season.

-Guard Steve Forgette has been a dynamic piece of the offensive line that has given the quarterback the time to make the passes that he has made this season.

Delta State
Micah Davis has a good has a good arm, quick release, and does a good job of knowing when to throw a touch pass and when he needs to put some extra heat on the ball. He is good athlete that can make plays with his feet, and throw accurately on the run. He shows good accuracy, hitting his receivers in stride rarely making them have to adjust to his throw. I would like to see him add some bulk to his frame, and he also needs to do a better job getting rid of the ball, will hold on to it to long some and takes unnecessary sacks. Two weeks in a row Micah has lead his team to come from behind victories against the #1 and #10 teams in the country.

Dominique Davenport is a good athlete that displays good quickness at cornerbqack. He’s a very smart football player with very good recognition skills. He is good in coverage, plays alot of man coverage and teams avoid throwing in his direction. He displays a quick pedal and receivers struggle to get any separation from him.

Humboldt State
-Running back Lyndon Rowell is an explosive player with good lateral quickness.  He  possesses good straight line speed and on film Rowell shows good hands out the backfield.  On all of the games I’ve watched Rowell is the best player on the field.  The biggest issue with Rowell is his physicality.  He needs to push piles and he looks a bit soft in pass protection, he goes for the cut block every time.

Western Oregon
-Offensive tackle Jason Slowey is the best offensive lineman in his conference.  Slowey looks comfortable in space and is able to reach the second level.  I would like to see Slowey bring more of a violent six inch punch and also be more consistent with his hand placement.  He has the body frame to add more bulk and overall strength.  Slowey will have to bend his knees and not allow his pad level to rise in order to be a successful offensive tackle.  On film he he has the ability to turn defensive lineman shoulders and finish off blocks.
