Slowly through the day news started breaking, Kansas State accepted a bid and will not be in a BCS bowl. At that time twitter exploded with new rumors. Suddenly reporters from across the country had new breaking news. Boise State vs. Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. This was all hours before the official BCS announcements on the mother ship. Then we saw that TCU was headed to San Diego to play and then the announcement that the Cotton Bowl had the only Big 12 vs. SEC matchup. Everyone thought for sure Boise State was headed to the BCS.
Around 3:00 a reporter from San Diego broke that Boise State was going to the Vegas Bowl and Virginia Tech would be playing in the Sugar Bowl. This even after CBS Sports announced that VA Tech was going to be playing in Atlanta. See, everyone thought that Boise State had earned that BCS bid to the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Then slowly one by one, more sources confirmed that Boise State was headed to Vegas. At this point @SugarBowlNOLA was taking a beating from Boise State fans and non-fans alike for this terrible decision. After all Virginia Tech lost to the same team twice with the last one being a complete beat down by Clemson 38-10, just the day before this dreadful decision.
This leaves me wondering why would the Sugar Bowl folks consider Virginia Tech given recent history in last years Orange Bowl. They only sold around 6,500 tickets through the school last year according to one source: http://www.gobblercountry.com/2010/12/14/1877209/2011-orange-bowl-virginia-techs-ticket-sales-lagging whether or not they lost money is not as important as the amount of empty seats when that game was played. Is that really what the Sugar Bowl wants? A half empty stadium, a matchup of number 11 and number 13 BCS ranked teams. Skipping the number 7 Boise State and the number 8 Kansas State for this?
So for now, Bronco Nation and the best Senior Class in all of College Football gets to travel to Las Vegas and take on the Arizona State Sun Devils. I feel sorry for the Sun Devils. They take on a team in Boise State that should have a huge chip on its shoulder thanks to the Sugar Bowl snubbing. Not to mention former Vandal Head Coach Dennis Erickson’s final game as the man in charge of the Devils.
I will post my score prediction for the game in future columns. Feel free to follow me on twitter @houseofhoyt if you dare. I’m not PC and always open my mouth before I think.
