Viewed as the worst Division One FBS conference by some, the Sun Belt as improved team-by-team over the past few years, and a few surprisingly solid seasons from Troy and Florida Atlantic as well as some other conference team bowl wins has given the conference some creditability.
Now, with Troy still have some great talent on offense after sending five defenders to the NFL, and Middle Tennessee State boasting some impressive talents that could lead the team to a conference championship and scratching at the Top 25 polls, the conference is planning on showcasing a more balance and more complete conference in 2010.
1. Dwight Dasher, Quarterback/Receiver, Middle Tennessee State
-The most athletic and versatile player in the conference, his speed could make him an Armani Edwards-like prospect
2. Jerrel Jernigan, Wide Receiver, Troy
-Playmaking receiver for the past few years, he’ll miss Levi Brown at quarterback and will have to hold off younger receivers.
3. Anthony Gaitor, Cornerback, Florida International
-The conference’s top cornerback the past three years arguably, he’ll get a chance to show his shutdown ability against good offenses.
4. Jamari Lattimore, Defensive End, Middle Tennessee State
-Top notch pass rusher, he’ll need to be ultra-productive and show more completeness if he hopes to emerge as a top prospect.
5. DuJuan Harris, Running Back, Troy
-Will be platooning a bit this year, his big body and power when running makes him an intriguing rotational back in the NFL.
6. Phillip Tanner, Running Back, Middle Tennessee State
-Workhorse back for MTST, he’ll be stabilizing the offense this year and will get many goal line carries.
7. Jamaam Jackson, Wide Receiver, North Texas
-Very athletic and has good size, he’ll be competing with former quarterback Riley Dodge for touches all year.
8. Brad Serini, Center, Florida International
-The conference’s best offensive lineman, he’ll have to control an inexperienced and lackluster offensive line this year.
9. Michael Lockley, Inside Linebacker, Florida Atlantic
-Athletic with good range, he’ll need to show he won’t get overpowered in traffic and drop back skills.
10. Jeff Van Camp, Quarterback, Florida Atlantic
-Took over for Rusty Smith at the end of last year and played really well. He’ll need to build on that, but has sub-par WRs, OL.
