Former U.S. Men’s National Team defender Taylor Twellman went off on the state of the team after they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
USMNT lost to Trinidad and Tobago, 2-1, on Tuesday night, while both Panama and Honduras pulled off victories. As a result, they both leapfrogged the United States in the CONCACAF hexagonal standings, and USMNT will not be joining them to play in Russia in two years.
And Twellman, who is now an analyst for ESPN, was furious about it.
Twellman joined Max Bretos to discuss what’s next for USMNT after the underwhelming result on ESPN News, and here are some of the highlights from his epic rant.
“The gloves should have been off years ago!” Twellman remarked. “We should have been having real criticism. And the discussion after Brazil, Max, was ‘Can we beat the Colombias and the Belgiums and the Argentinas of the world?’ You kidding me? We can’t beat Trinidad on a field that’s too wet and too heavy? What are we doing? What are we doing?!”
He also added that “U.S. Soccer is not prepared” for International play, and commented that the failure to qualify for the World Cup is an “utter embarrassment.”

Everything Twellman said is true, and hopefully this shameful course of events leads to some changes in coaching and management going forward.
