Tonight’s game in Newark was Robby Fabbri’s 99th game of his career. He is on the verge of cracking a smile, and his performance for the Blues might just put him over the edge.
The Devils were a dominant club at home, undefeated in regulation over their first 10 games of the season. That’s a quarter of their home schedule without a loss. It’s even more impressive, given that they can’t get out of their own way during road games. A team that was that solid at home, with just a mediocre record on the road should be, at the very least, in playoff position. The Devils currently reside in 6th place in the Metro, and one spot outside of the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Fabbri’s Blues are in 2nd place in all of the Western Conference, stuck behind the pesky Chicago Blackhawks. They are 7-2-1 in their last 10, but part of that may have something to do with their home record, which is 12-1-3. They’re road record is somewhat halting as well, at 4-7-1, but their recent success, and New Jersey’s recent reputation made it seem like fait accompli that the Blues were going to win this. What did emerge as a surprise, though, was Fabbri’s two goals, which now put him at 8 on the season. Vladimir Tarasenko added three assists in a perfromance universally being described as “less surprising”.
It remains to be seen if this will continue St. Louis’ streak of quality hockey, set New Jersey off on a downward spiral, or put a grin on Robby Fabbri’s face.
