The Redskins’ Are No More

The Washington Redskins are no more after a federal judge ordered the cancellation of their trademark. The judge ruled the name to be disparaging to Native Americans.

Judge Gerald Bruce Lee issued a 70-page ruling saying the organization can still use the name but the team would lose legal protections which are usually covered under a trademark. The Redskins’ organization can still appeal the ruling if they wish.

Jeff Lopez is the lawyer for the Native Americans. He says his clients are hopeful that the team will take heed of the decision and change its name. As of now the Redskin’s organization has not issued a comment on what they are going to do.
