Stick a fork in this season because it is done.
While not mathematically eliminated (yet) the Sharks remain a full eight points behind the Jets in the playoff race. Eight points that, let’s be honest, they aren’t likely to make up in the games that remain. The Sharks are also still six behind Calgary for third in the West. Maybe with more time, they could do it, but not this season. Not at the end of what has been one long fart noise on ice.
I think the Sharks current tragic number is 14. (Have also heard 13 because the Jets won. Either way, it’s not looking good.)
The week started off on a sour note, with a 5-2 loss to the Jets. I did sketches and tweeted them live during them game to summarize how I felt about it. It was not good. (I’ll try and get those added to this post a bit later) Tuesday was probably the closest thing to a must win the Sharks have had all season and they didn’t even make it a close game. That game pretty much told me the season was over, even though there we still games to be played.
Thursday was far better, as the Sharks beat the Leafs 4-1. Honestly, I had figured they’d lose because that’s just the way this season has gone. Losing to bottom feeders has been par for the course (hello Buffalo!) I guess no one is as bad as the Leafs.
To say the game tonight against Montreal was bad would be wrong. It was fine, but it wasn’t what the Sharks needed. They weren’t blown out, but they weren’t extraordinarily aggressive all game, either. I felt like a lot of the game just sort of happened without much of note. The Sharks had a few strong pushes to tie right at the end, but their best chance dinged off the post, and then the Habs scored an empty netter to seal the deal with only a few seconds left in the third. Carey Price was unreal and pretty much the best part of the whole game. Who needs explosive offense when you’ve got that guy in net?
With 10 games left, you have to wonder how long CSN and crew will continue the “make the playoffs” narrative. It’s already rather ridiculous, and they’re still beating it like a dead horse. Just let us be happy about our Patty Marleau bobble heads and end the season in April. That will be the least complicated ending to a season that’s already been way too long.
