Williams really has become an after thought on this Cowboys team. Both Allen Hurns and Cole Beasley are above him, and they have intriguing talent in Tavon Austin and Michael Gallup who can also surpass him.
Against the Panthers, it was made abundantly clear that the receivers ahead of Williams are not enough. There is next to no trust with the receiving core, and no one is getting any separation down field.
Williams is the most experienced and should be the most comfortable, and needs to prove that he can still be a deep threat. The Cowboys need something in the passing game to keep a defense somewhat honest, and Williams still has the ability to have some sort of impact.
Williams will never be a top receiver, but if he can bring some kind of a deep threat along with the reliability that Beasley is able to bring, things might actually open up a bit in the running game.
He has been much better as a number too, taking advantage of breakdowns and easy matchups. Right now, however, no defense is going to be giving him the attention of a number one wide receiver, so it is on him to find a way to get involved in the deep passing game.
Additionally, Prescott desperately needs a receiver who can do something downfield. Even if the play calling is not doing them any favors, Williams can be the player that opens up the field at least a little bit, having a huge impact on the overall offense.
