Toronto FC Look for First Blood in Trillium Cup

Toronto FC takes to the pitch again this Saturday and are looking to avenge their 3-0 loss to DC United seven days ago. It was Toronto’s slow start which led to them conceding 2 goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. After a solid week of training, the Reds have a couple of things to look forward to ahead of today’s tilt with the Columbus Crew.

Oscar Gordon of Toronto FC

Saturday marks the probable introduction of Richard Eckersley, a former Manchester United reserve player. Aron Winter was able to secure the 22-year old’s services on loan from Burnley. The player has said he feels ready if the ‘gaffer’ calls upon him, and Aron Winter has stated that the player would probably make an appearance. Alan Gordon is also tipped to be back in the lineup for Saturday afternoon. Adrian Cann was also in training on Friday and looks fit to play after leaving the game against DC United with bruised ribs. Alen Stevanovic looks to be out for today’s game as he has not fully recovered yet from an abductor strain.

A short history on Toronto FC vs Columbus reveals that today’s game means more than just another 3 points. This is the first installment of the Trillium Cup, an Ontario-Ohio rivalry which has brewed over the years due to the disgust shown by both teams fans towards each other. History shows that Columbus has enjoyed more success with a record of 5-6-0, while Toronto is 0-6-5. However, TFC look to draw first blood in this rivalry, and to start their 7 game stand in 21 days on the right foot.
