Total-MLS Top 5 – August 16

The Western Conference continues to flex its muscle while the Eastern Conference is a dogfight from top to bottom. Only one Eastern team makes the Top 5 again as the West continues to dominate our rankings. Let’s take a look at this week’s rankings.

1. Los Angeles Galaxy – LA took the week off in MLS action but stayed hot with a big win last night in the CONCACAF Champions League. The Galaxy were a unanimous first place in the rankings, receiving first place votes from all of our writers.

2. FC Dallas – Dallas earned a draw on the road at PPL Park and remains cemented as the number two team. Dallas got a second place votes and one second place vote and one third place votes.

3. Seattle Sounders – The Sounders have hit a bit of a rough stretch as they failed to win again this weekend vs Chivas USA. They take on Dallas Saturday in the league’s marquee match of the week. Seattle got a variety of votes from seconds through fourths.

4. Real Salt Lake – After a road loss in Toronto, RSL barely hangs on to the fourth spot in the rankings. They travel to Houston this weekend in what could be a playoff preview. RSL got a range of votes from thirds through fifths from our writers.

5. Columbus Crew – The Eastern Conference leaders remain in the rankings again this week.  After dispatching of the Revolution last week, the Crew now set their sights on an East showdown with the Philadelphia Union on Saturday. Columbus got one second place vote and the rest of the votes were thirds through fifths.

Others receiving votes: Colorado Rapids, Philadelphia Union
