We’ve reached week nine of our top 5 as voted on by the Total-MLS writers. This week, seven teams received votes and we have a unanimous number one team who holds on to the top spot for a sixth straight week. Let’s have a look at the top 5 for Week 14.
1. Los Angeles Galaxy – LA showed the defending champion Rapids that they may be just be the best team in MLS. They remained number one but this week received first place votes from each writer. They will only get better as GK Donovan Ricketts is returning and Landon Donovan will be back soon.
2. FC Dallas – A loss last week dropped them to fifth but Dallas bounces back this week to second. A come from behind win and other teams losing helped them jump back near the top. FCD received all second and third place votes.
3. Real Salt Lake – A late “embellishment” by Charlie Davies cost them three points. RSL remains third place in the West and in our rankings although they do have games in hand. They got votes ranging from second to fifth.
4. Seattle Sounders – Welcome to the rankings Seattle. After a late Fredy Montero goal gave them a win in Toronto, the Sounders leap into the rankings in the fourth spot. Seattle received a variety of votes from third through fifth. Two writers did not have them in the top 5.
5. New York Red Bulls – New York and Portland played an amazing game Sunday night with Dwayne De Rosario scoring a late penalty to earn New York a point. The Red Bulls edged out their Eastern Conference rivals Philadelphia for the last spot in the top 5. RBNY got votes ranging from third to fifth. They were not voted for by two writers.
Others receiving votes: Philadelphia Union, Columbus Crew
