While tournament play hasn’t yet started, we are already well into one of the best weeks in all of golf, U.S. Open week!
The U.S. Open Championship, one of four majors played during the course of the “golf season” (it’s always golf season), is arguably the most difficult. The tournament is played at various locations around the county, and is usually played at a links style course. These courses tend to have extremely narrow fairways and very high rough. Accuracy is the more of a factor at this tournament than at many others.
This years U.S. Open will be played, for the first time, in Wisconsin at Erin Hills. Typically this major is played on a par 70 course, but Erin Hills is not the typical U.S. Open course at all. The course is a par 72, and if played at full length, 7,800 yards, will be one of the longest courses to host the major. The course may not be the typical links people are used to seeing during the U.S. Open, but it certainly offers the iconic tall grass rough. However, some of the grass has been mowed down to widen the shorter cuts.
Slightly different than what we usually expect from this tournament, Erin Hills still seems like a great course. It will be interesting to see what challenges lie ahead for the best golfers in the world.
One challenge may end up being mother nature. It looks like rain might be a factor heading into the weekend, and with showers expected tonight the course would be wet tomorrow. Some golfers play well when it’s wet, sometimes weather doesn’t seem like a factor for some pros. Me, I make excuses for myself no matter what the weather is. Regardless of weather and course conditions, this weekend will definitely make for some great golf.
