The Sixers have set records in recent years for the number of guys they cycle in and out of the roster. Of players who are no longer with the team, there were a whopping 17 who accumulated stats for the Sixers last season. It seems crazy that we could have spent time cheering for these guys just last year and now have no idea where they are playing these days. So let’s take a look at where each of these former Sixers are currently plying their trade.
- Michael Carter-Williams – Following an up-and-down first half-season with Milwaukee, MCW will be looking to help the Bucks return to the playoffs and show he can improve his shooting enough to be a starting point guard for a good NBA team. He also most recently participated in mini-camp this summer for Team USA.
- Brandon Davies – The Sixers’ former Charlie Hustle will be playing in the Italian Serie A league for Pallacanestro Varese, after reaching an agreement with the team earlier this month.
- Larry Drew II – Drew ended last season with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the D-league, but had a good showing with the Pelicans in summer league, making 2nd-team All-Summer League out in Vegas. He parleyed that performance into a deal with AS Monaco Basket in France.
- Tim Frazier – After ending the season with Portland last year, the Trailblazers are expected to bring him back this season as part of their youth movement. He’s currently on a non-guaranteed deal for around $800k this year.
- Drew Gordon – Earlier this month, Gordon signed with Champagne Chalons-Reims of the French LNB Pro A. If you want to whip out your French-English google translate, here’s an article about his signing.
- Chris Johnson – Remember Johnson was actually an opening night starter for the Sixers last season? After bouncing around a bit last season, he signed a multi-year deal with the Jazz back in March. He’s on a non-guaranteed deal this year so he’ll have to make his way onto Utah’s final roster in training camp.
- Malcolm Lee – Lee was traded by the 87ers to the Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA D-league last season. He averaged 8.2 points in 12 games behind another former Sixer, Lorenzo Brown.
- Luc Mbah a Moute – It looked like LRMAM would be playing in Northern California this upcoming year, as he had an agreement for a 1-year deal in Sacramento. However, the team voided the contract following his physical over concerns with his right shoulder. Mbah a Moute has since filed a grievance with the Kings through the NBA Player’s Union.
- K.J. McDaniels – McDaniels famously bet on himself rather than accepting Sam Hinkie’s 2nd-round contract special, and it certainly paid off for him. McDaniels signed a 3-year, $10M deal with Houston last month. With a player option for the third year, K.J. could be just 2 years away from an even fatter payday.
- JaVale McGee – McGee is still 7’0″, which means teams are still giving him opportunities to make it in the league. Most recently, Dallas signed him to a 2-year deal (club option on the second year) where he’ll make $1.27M this season. Of course, his $12M cap hit also makes him the highest-paid Sixers player for this season as well.
- Jason Richardson – J-Rich followed Malik Rose to A-town and signed a non-guaranteed deal with the Hawks earlier this month. If he makes the team out of training camp, the 34-year-old will make the veteran’s minimum of $1.45M this season.
- Glenn Robinson III – After playing with the Hawks in summer league, Robinson inked a 3-year deal with the Pacers. Only the first year of the deal is guaranteed, for $1.1M.
- Thomas Robinson – After the Sixers originally blocked Brooklyn’s waiver claim to T-Rob last season, the forward signed a 2-year deal worth $2.2M with the Nets this offseason. He’ll be working to find some minutes behind former Sixer Thad Young in the frontcourt rotation.
- Alexey Shved – The Shvedder returned to his native Russia this offseason, signing a 3-year deal to play with BC Khimki of the VTB United League.
- Henry Sims – Sims reached a deal just yesterday to come to training camp with the Suns. Still just 25 and having shown enough to be a serviceable back-up center in the league, I was surprised the big man received virtually no interest in free agency.
- Ish Smith – Despite playing the best ball of his career to end the season with the Sixers last year, Smith remains an NBA free agent. He’s constantly brought up as a fallback option whenever anyone talks about the need to upgrade the Sixers point guard situation. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him brought back in if/when the likes of Scottie Wilbekin and T.J. McConnell struggle in camp and the preseason.
- Malcolm Thomas – In April, Thomas signed a contract in Puerto Rico with the Piratas de Quebradillas of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional. He averaged 12.0 points across 8 games with the team.
