The Los Angeles Rams signed 2015 First-Team All-Mountain West defensive end Ian Seau as an undrafted free agent. The team can only hope that Seau is able to have even something remotely close to the career that his uncle, Hall-of-Fame linebacker Junior Seau had.
Ian played in 37 games in three seasons with Nevada, totaling 106 combined tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks and eight forced fumbles. Seau also ranks No. 8 in program history in career sacks and No. 11 in career tackles for loss. Seau may have the blood for football, but his size and technique may be too slow in the NFL.
Seau was ranked near the bottom in many drills for linebackers at the NFL Scouting Combine, and his short shuttle (4.51) and 3-cone (7.63) dropped his value drastically. NFL draft Writer Lance Zierlein explained more in-depth why his lack of explosion off the ball may be his downfall.
“Hip stiffness limits chase speed down the line and general change of direction. Tackle production will always be average. Might be too stiff and slow to play in space as outside linebacker.”
Currently the Rams have Seau listed as a defensive end, but his best chance would be to follow in his uncle’s footstep and become a linebacker/DE. The Rams need depth at the OLB spot, as they currently have Akeem Ayers, Mark Barron and Josh Forrest. Also, special team standout Cameron Lynch and UDFA Cory Littleton.
Chances of Making Final Roster: 7/10
Seau has a lot of work to do in the quickness category if he wants to have success at the NFL level. The reason why he has a good chance of making the roster is because of how hard he has played in the first two preseason games. He looked great. Also with the family name Seau, why not give the guy a shot.
