With 12 games played in the current Bundesliga season, the German footballing titans, Bayern Munich, have found themselves in the very unfamiliar position of being placed just fifth in the league table. It’s an astonishing place for Bayern Munich to have found themselves in as they had won the Bundesliga for the previous six seasons, and much of the blame has been placed at their new head coach, Niko Kovac.
Kovac got the Bayern Munich job after a successful spell with Eintracht Frankfurt, and hopes were high that he could consolidate the outstanding record of their previous head coach, Jupp Heynckes. Whilst things got off to a solid start with a 5-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Super Cup and a 3-1 Bundesliga home win against Hoffenheim, it seems that things didn’t go quite so smoothly in the following matches.
Bayern Munich’s loyal army of fans had to endure watching their much-loved club suffering shocking results such as a 2-0 away defeat by Hertha Berlin and a disastrous 0-3 home thrashing by Borussia Monchengladbach. But it was when Kovac’s side were treated to a 3-2 away defeat by their fierce rivals, Borussia Dortmund, that things got really serious.
This saw Borussia Dortmund consolidate their hold at the top of the Bundesliga, whilst Bayern Munich slumped back down to fifth place in the league table behind the likes of Borussia Mönchengladbach, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt. As a result, there have been many Bayern Munich fans calling for Kovac to get the sack.
Whilst all football teams have their ups and downs, the troubles in the Bayern Munich camp seem particularly acute at the moment. Many commentators have stated that Kovac simply lacks the authority necessary to control a squad packed with so many egos as Bayern Munich, and it’s hard to see how he could turn around such a lacklustre run of form.

Kovac certainly managed to prove many of the doubters wrong at the end of November when Bayern Munich thrashed Benfica 5-1 in the Champions League. But with ageing players like Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski on the scoresheet, it will have done little to counter the accusations that Bayern Munich are relying too heavily on their old guard.
It’s clear that something needs to be done to transform the face of the Bayern Munich squad in the coming months, as they can’t expect stars like Robben to continue playing top-level football in their late thirties. And with Borussia Dortmund showing no sign of losing their unbeaten run at the top of the Bundesliga table, it seems that time could be running out for Kovac to perform a miracle at Bayern Munich.
