Phillies reportedly reach deal with 17-year old Venezuelan outfielder Simon Muzziotti

The Philadelphia Phillies made a little bit of a splash last week when the signing period for international free agents opened up. The Phillies went to work with signing a deal with 6-5 pitcher Francisco Morales out of Venezuela, the 12th-best Latin America prospect according to Baseball America. He was considered the top prospect signed by the Phillies last week, which included three others in Baseball America’s top 50 international prospects list, but the Phillies managed to add one more coveted player from Venezuela today.

According to a report from CSN Philly, the Phillies have reached a deal with 17-year old outfielder Simon Muzziotti to a $750,000 deal. Muzziotti went back on the market after Major League Baseball voided all contracts signed by the Boston Red Sox after it was determined Boston had violated the rules for the international signing system. Boston had all five of their contracts with international players voided, including Muzziotti. Boston’s loss will hopefully be Philly’s gain.

CSN Philly describes Muzziotti of having similar skills to Mickey Moniak, whom the team just drafted fresh out of high school with the top overall pick in the recent MLB amateur draft. So, for at least one afternoon, we can envision a future Phillies outfield manned by Moniak and Muzziotti at two spots, even if that may be no fewer than four years away. CSN Philly also says Muzziotti could be a leadoff batter with some good speed, so pay attention to that once he gets in the farm system.

Tip of the cap to CSN Philly.
