Yanks Win and Take Series From Sox

The Sox came in hoping for a win to split the series with the Yankees and leave 5.5 games up in the AL East.   The Sox had ace Chris Sale on the mound, so they had all reason to be confident, but Sale ended up giving up 3 homers and getting outpitched by Severino.

The Yankees scored first in the series finale when Headley hit a solo home run off of Sale in the 3rd inning.   The Yankees then hit back to back solo home runs off of Sale in the 4th when Holliday and Frazier went yard.  Sox 0-3.  Sale didn’t make it out of the 5th inning and he sure didn’t look like the guy locked to be the next Cy Young last night.

The Sox finally scored a run in the top of the 6th when Nunez scored on a passed ball by Sanchez.   Sox 1-3.  Unfortunately that run would be moot as the Yankees would end up scoring six times in the bottom of the inning.  Kelly and Scott both took the mound in the 6th, but got pulled in favor of Addison Reed when the bases were loaded with only one out.   Reed got a strikeout for the 2nd out and that is when things got complicated.  First it looked like Reed struck Sanchez out, but the umpire didn’t call an obvious strike.   Pitching coach Carl Willis got ejected for loudly complaining about balls and strikes.   Sanchez then hit an infield grounder that he was initially called out on, but on review, it was shown he was safe.   The Yankees scored and it kept the inning alive.   The Yankees put the Sox away for good when Castro hit a 3 run RBI double and then Aaron Judge hit a 2 run homer.   Sox 1-9.

Reed was out of the game and Barnes came in to get the 3rd and final out.  Heath Hembree came out and pitched a scoreless 7th before Blaine Boyer pitched a scoreless 8th.  The Sox scored their 2nd and final run of the night when Leon hit an RBI single off of Yankees pitcher Gallegos.   It was way too little and way too late though, as the Yankees took the series.   The Sox are now only 3.5 games up on the Yankees in the fight for the AL East.
