The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.
If you didn’t enjoy last week’s card, I’m not quite sure what you’re doing on this website. And since you did enjoy it, let me tell you that this weekend has some matchups that, while they don’t have the significance, they are equally as exciting. Check out one from early on in the night that I think you’ll like.

What makes him impressive
Karl Roberson is the first fighter to get a contract on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series to make his UFC debut. You may remember him from his brutal KO of Dan Spohn. However, that’s not his only violent KO. In fact, the man has four straight first round finishes, including two KOs and two arm bars. His ability to finish fights fast is even more impressive considering his opponents were a combined 26-10. Not exactly what most fighters start their career with.
Why he has been overlooked
He’s only a short five fights into his career. Plus, I think the hype that was created around the Contender Series seems to have waned with time and as Dana signed more and more talent. If you remember back to that feeling of him putting a man out in 15 seconds, it’ll be easy to get jacked up about this fight again.
What makes this a good match-up
Darren Stewart is the kind of hard-nosed fighter who wants to come right at you and punch you directly in the face. Luckily for Roberson that is the style he excels against. His counter punching and work in the clinch are his greatest assets. Additionally, this will keep him from hitting the ground, which while he is adept at that area, it is not his best.
