Sox Get Walked Off In Series Opener with Indians

The Red Sox headed into Cleveland for a 4 game series with the red hot Indians.   The Sox entered the game with a 5 game lead on the Yankees and would need to have a good showing against the Indians to keep it that way.   The Sox had Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound vs. Mike Clevinger for the Indians.   The game went back and forth, but then the Sox had the lead heading into the 8th inning.   The Indians tied the game thanks to Matt Barnes and then they walked off by of an error from Brock Holt in the 9th.   The Sox have walked off on a lot of opponents this season and they got a taste of their own medicine last night.

The Sox jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st when Andrew Benintendi hit a 2 run homer to start the game off.   Sox 2-0.  The Indians struck right back though when Perez hit a 3 run homer off of ERod in the bottom of the 2nd inning.   Sox 2-3.  The Sox took the lead back in the top of the 5th when Hanley Ramirez hit a 2 run homer off of Clevinger and chased him from the game.   Sox 4-3.  Rodriguez stayed in the game until he had two outs in the 6th inning.   Farrell went to get him and went with Joe Kelly in relief.   Kelly was able to get the final out to close the book on ERod’s outing.   Rodriguez’s pitching line was 98 pitches, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB and 5 Ks.

Kelly came back out for the 7th and had himself a quick 1-2-3 inning.   Matt Barnes was tapped to pitch the 8th.   Addison Reed wasn’t available and Farrell wanted to keep away from Workman if he could, so there were slim pickings to finish this game out.   Barnes has had a horrible split between home and away games and he continued that trend last night.  Barnes issued a lead off walk and then a single before being pulled in favor of Heath Hembree.  Hembree got a strikeout for the first out of the inning, but then he gave up the game tying RBI single to Encarnacion.   Sox 4-4.  Robby Scott came out of the pen and he was able to at least keep the game tied when he K’ed the next two batters in order.   Farrell ended up going with Brandon Workman in the 9th.  Workman gave up a lead off double to Goyer and then Perez hit what was meant to be a sacrifice bunt, but Holt botched the play and Goyer came home to score.   The Indians walked off in celebration of the first win of the series.
