Joe Thomas takes shot at Browns front office

Amid the Browns’ frustration of losing to their most hated rival and still searching for their first win, left tackle Joe Thomas vented a little bit Sunday about the franchise’s rebuilding philosophy.

“You’ve got to lie in the bed that you’ve made,” Thomas said, via The Chronicle-Telegram.

The bed that Thomas is referring to is the absence of right tackle Mitchell Schwartz and three-time Pro Bowl center Alex Mack, who both left in free agency.

The Steelers took advantage of the Browns’ offensive line and had eight sacks in their 24-9 victory. They entered the game with 13 sacks, the fewest in the league.

“We lost a couple really good players, I think the best at their position,” Thomas said. “But that was our strategy in the offseason. That’s what we decided to do.

“The guys that are making the personnel decisions, they’re the experts on that.”

The word “experts” is sometimes used sarcastically. This seems to be one of those times.

The Browns (0-11) are pretty much starting from scratch. They drafted 14 players this year, and 12 have seen action.

It’s a project that will require patience, although it can be trying for someone like Thomas. He hasn’t missed a game in his 10-year career. He’s made the Pro Bowl every year and he’s been named First Team All-Pro six times, including the last three years.

Perhaps Thomas is the only player who can get away with saying what he said.
