2012 NHL Central Scouting Mid-Term / Final Rankings Movement Tracker

NHL Central Scouting
One of my favorite songs as a kid was The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.  You know the song, “You gotta know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away, know when to run, because you never count your money, when you’re sittin’ at the table they’ll be time enough for countin’, when the dealin’s done.”  Yet his song actually had some ok gems of advice with these lyrics, “Now every Gambler knows, the secret to survivin’, is knowing what to throw away and knowin’ what to keep, because every hand’s a winner and every hand’s a loser” are really all talking about the skill of the game.  Top level poker players often have a natural ability to quickly calculate their odds.  I was never really that great at math.  In fact, I hated it.  I really did all that I could to avoid it, and in college I managed to fulfill my math requirement in a Statistics class.  I still may struggle to utilize Euclidean Geometry correctly, but I can read a graph well enough.  I can understand numbers well enough to identify trends and understand how they can reveal a bigger story.  Drafting is a big stakes game for professional sports teams.  Wild fans know all too well the long-term consequences of bad drafting.  Bad drafting along with some poor personnel decisions has forced the club to go through a sort of purgatory before it can turn around its fortunes.  Luckily the team identified the problem and now can boast a fairly promising prospect pool.  In many ways, its a lot like honing one’s game in poker.  Sure, you can familiarize one’s self with the odds but there is a level of gamesmanship that separates the good poker players from the great.  The best poker players put in hours and hours of practice whether in real face to face games or online.  But before anyone puts their money down in a tournament, unless you just want to throw away you should practice.  A popular method you hear of now days if you watch events like the World Series of Poker is to practice online in websites like this one here.  You may not become a Daniel Negreanu right away but who knows.

Daniel Negreanu  How is understanding trends in the draft like playing poker?

NHL teams also have their ways of practicing.  At the end of the season, the scouts return to their respective team headquarters and the debates begin.  Scouts provide their list of players they believe to have the most potential and skill and then discuss the pro’s and con’s of these players.  Teams employ incredible different computer programs to go along with their own workouts and interviews to find out just about everything you possibly can imagine.  NHL Scouts, GM’s and player / personnel directors get another opportunity to evaluate prospects at the annual draft combine where the players are put through their paces.  This yields a statistical smorgasbord that fans read into as they debate just how important is a potential draftee’s VO Max results are.  Fans too get jacked up for the draft, and they scour mock drafts, digest draft guides and listen to the experts offer up their opinions then they themselves come up with their own wish list.  I’ve seen these fans first hand last summer when the NHL Draft was held in St. Paul.  I was one of them.  You had fans from almost every team in attendance, even these guys who seem to love poker too.  It just gave me all the more reason to loathe Canucks fans.

Once the draft begins, the gamesmanship I mentioned before.  That poker-like skill to read the trends of the draft so that your team acquires the player it wants and doesn’t wait too long so that those guys you hold high in regard are picked up by another franchise.  Is a player so good they are worth trading up for?  Or can you trade down and possibly get two other players you wouldn’t mind taking later in the draft?  Unlike NHL teams, we fans often do not have the tools they do to analyze the prospects.  But I am going to try to give all NHL fans a tool they may find useful.  A movement tracker using NHL Central Scouting’s Final Rankings which were just released a few days ago.  I have made the movement tracker in past years so fans can get a read on the strength of the draft, or at the very least the confidence the scouts seem to have in their selections.  You’ve heard the general assessments about 2012 being a ‘weaker’ or ‘below average’ draft class; but just about any draft has future star players that potentially could be selected in any round.  The Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators have made a living off selecting quality talent in the later rounds.  So are they better poker players than the rest of the league?  So what is my read on the 2012 NHL Draft based on the movement of CSS’ rankings?

Central Scouting’s assessment of all of their lists show remarkable stability towards the top of their lists.  The North American Skaters are fairly consistent through the Top 15 picks but after that the movement begins which tells you it gets a little dicey as the confidence starts to fade.  It is just as stable in for the European Skaters as there is great consistency through the Top 20 but after that the movement becomes very extreme which makes European selections a bit more high risk.  Goaltending lists were also fairly consistent as the North American list was strong through the Top 15 and the European list through the Top 6.  So even if its not strong, the scouts have a fair amount of resoluteness early on.

There are plenty of major movers both up and down in the draft.  If the Wild have a trend, they like to draft the player that made the big move.  Players like Brent Burns and Brett Bulmer (maybe its a Brent / Brett trend) come to mind as guys who made rapid ascents up the draft rankings.  In some cases the Wild ignored their ranking to a degree but put more value on the strong trajectory of these players’ potential.  Just like poker though, picking trajectory over ranking can be a risk because of that trajectory fizzles a GM can look foolish for not taking a higher ranked player (see the Minnesota North Stars and Brian Lawton).

As I promised you here is the 2012 Central Scouting’s Final Rankings Movement tracker.  By clicking the title of each list you can see the heights and weights of the respective players in case you were curious since I just have the player, position and who they played for on this particular list for simplicity reasons.  The list is color coded; with Pink being players who moved up at least 10 or more places from their Mid-Term ranking, Orange for players who moved up at least 4 to 9 places from their mid-term assessment, and gray for +3/-3 movement, green for moving backwards 4 to 9 places and lastly blue for guys who fell at least 10 spots or more.  Players who were not rated in the Mid-term rankings I did not color at all.  I hope this is a tool that you can use when you make your Mock Drafts and perhaps give you an indication who may be some of this drafts best sleeper picks.  Enjoy!
