Floyd Reese, the General Manager of the Titans resigned Friday morning, according to reports.
A 31-year veteran of the NFL, Reese’s contract was due to expire in February. He was not given a vote of confidence by owner Bud Adams last October, when Adams held a press conference to announce the promotion of Steve Underwood. Adams has given Reese lukewarm support at best since then.
Reese joined the organization (then the Oilers) as a linebackers coach in 1986 after coaching stints with the Lions, 49ers, and Vikings. He moved to the front office in 1990 as assistant general manager and became the GM in 1994. His latest title was Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.
Reese’s responsibilities as GM included all personnel matters, including free agency, the draft, scouting, and player contracts. He also oversaw the Football Operations staff.
The only qualified person to replace him as an in-house candidate seems to be Director of Player Personnel Rich Snead. Adams will more than likely consult with his fellow owners and Underwood to come up with a list of other candidates.
Although I wasn’t often happy with some of Reese’s decisions, I wasn’t in the Fire Reese camp either. Total Titans wishes Floyd and his family well. His name has been publicly rumored as a possible replacement for Ernie Accorsi, who is retiring as the Giants’ GM, and has also been mentioned in conjunction with the Lions, who currently have Matt Millen serving in that capacity. The Dolphins may also have interest, after the departure of Nick Saban, who had both coach and personnel responsibilities.
With all his years in the league, he should have no problem getting another job somewhere.
