Saints Nation: Jason McKie Back With Saints

McKie So after the surprise cut of Jason McKie just as camp started, he was brought back today. That is a move I would have never predicted. McKie is a legitimate NFL starter at fullback, and I thought he’d be, at the very least, one of the hardest cuts to make on the last day of preseason. Instead, he was shown the door without ever really being given a chance. Just like that, though, he’s back. I’m equally surprised that McKie didn’t get snatched up by another team, but in this case he’s the beneficiary of fullback Marcus Mailei getting injured. The Saints waived Mailei today after he sustained an undisclosed injury, and they re-signed McKie as his replacement. McKie will now get his chance to show what he can do in black and gold. You’d think he has a tough mountain to climb, but I also remember backup fullback Zak Keasey getting banged up in the first preseason game. That means McKie could rocket up the depth chart pretty fast, though you have to think Heath Evans is still the unquestioned starter. The question is the same now as I’ve always stated – will the Saints keep more than one fullback on their 53 man roster? Recent history says no, but recent history has also seen Saints’ fullbacks getting injured and leaving the team very thin and vulnerable at the position. Maybe they’ll have a chance of heart this year. If they do, I stand firm in my belief that McKie would be a terrific guy to have on the team, both as a capable lead blocker and a solid locker room personality.
