Sights & Sounds from Pittsburgh Pirates spring training – clutch hits

Each day during spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates Breakdown will give you game recaps, news updates, and video of player and coach interviews, highlights, and more from the day.

The Pirates’ offense has been slow out of the gate to start spring training. Whether you believe it’s them selling out to their new on-base approach or not, it’s still nice to see the Pirates get some clutch RBI hits in game situations. Pedro Florimon put the Bucs ahead 3-1 in the sixth inning with his two-run RBI single. The team then pitched their way to victory.

Here are some brief highlights from the Pirates 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox:

Ryan Vogelsong got the start for Pittsburgh and was fairly impressive as he went four innings, allowed one run on just four hits and struck out two. Outside of his very poor first outing, Vogelsong has been pretty good this spring. Vogelsong isn’t overly concerned with spring training results as he is just trying to get his arm ready for the upcoming season.

Here are Vogelsong’s post-game comments following his outing:

Another footnote from the ballgame was Daniel Bard closing out the victory against his former team. Since his fantastic 2011 season, Bard has consistently struggled to find the strike zone and most likely is organizational depth for the Pirates, but either way, it had to feel good for the pitcher to close out a win against his former club.
